Miss Ross and Aretha Hit Daytime TV

Published by Michael Arceneaux on Tuesday, February 22, 2011 at 12:00 am.

Two musical legends have unveiled plans to hit the daytime circuit.

First, it’s been announced that Aretha Franklin will grant her first onscreen interview since her hospitalization to Wendy Williams.

Williams revealed:

“The legendary Aretha Franklin has invited me to do an exclusive, in-person, intimate conversation with her in Detroit. The way I figure, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I’m going to go to Detroit, where Aretha lives and where she reigns supreme, and this is like the big sit-down interview.”

Though she didn’t say when the interview would be happening, Wendy noted that Aretha will take her to the gym and they would then “have high tea together.”

Yes, she fancy, huh?

The other legendary artist ready to open up is Diana Ross.

The notoriously reclusive star will make an appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show.

The episode, set to air on Friday, will feature Diana alongside all of her children and her first grandson. Miss Ross will also perform. I’m wondering if the Michael Jackson topic will be off-limits, considering the fact that, according to MJ’s will, he wanted Miss Ross to have custody of his children.

Michael Vick Scheduled To Appear On Oprah

Published by Michael Arceneaux on Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at 12:00 am.

In yet another coup for the final season of The Oprah Winfrey Show, it has been announced that Michael Vick will be appearing on the show on February 24.

Oprah will no doubt ask the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback about his fall from and subsequent return to grace over the last year.

Producers confirm that Oprah will inquire about jail, charity work, and football. And yeah, dogs, too.

Recently Oprah had made a bet (before calling it off, citing that she doesn’t gamble) that she would be the first to land an interview with Vick.

Vick himself gave her the edge when he told USA Today: “If the bet was made, she’ll probably win, because I know nothing about that other guy.”

Based on his ratings, neither do other people.

Anyway, while this is a big get for Oprah, it may not exactly be a done deal.

CNBC’s Darren Rovell reports that the deal is still pending as Eagles officials and advisers have expressed concerned about the angle of the interview.

Y’all, just hire him a media coach and call it a day. Oprah is not going to bite.

Oprah Sharing Family Secrets, Stage With First Lady

Published by Michael Arceneaux on Monday, January 24, 2011 at 12:00 am.

On today’s edition of The Oprah Winfrey Show, Oprah Winfrey will reveal a family secret that she says sent her reeling.

In a clip for the upcoming episode, Oprah said:

“I thought I’d seen it all. I was given some news that literally shook me to my core. This time, I’m the one being reunited. I was keeping a family secret for months, and on Monday you’re going to hear it straight from me.”

With hype like this I hope she’s announcing that Jay-Z is her cousin, thrice removed and that’s why they’ve been hanging out so often lately.

That or she’s kin to Colonel Sanders and that’s why you, and you, and you, will each get a free order of boneless wings. You know, the hot kind!

After Oprah reveals her secret, she’ll be back to bringing in the big names for the final season of her daytime talk show.

According to the National Enquirer, First Lady Michelle Obama will appear on The Oprah Winfrey Show on Thursday.

The White House itself has confirmed that Michelle O will be returning to Chicago to tape an episode.

Reports say that Michelle will discuss the nationwide initiative to support military families. The First Lady has advocated substantially on this and against childhood obesity in her first two years of service.

Top Ten Oprah Moments of 2010

Published by Michael Arceneaux on Friday, December 24, 2010 at 12:00 am.

As we draw closer and closer to the end of the Goddess’ reign on daytime television, it’s time to recall some of Oprah Winfrey’s biggest moments of the year.

This year, The Oprah Winfrey Show discussed drug abuse, sexual abuse, physical ailments, lavish gifts, and highly anticipated reunions.

Here are our 10 Oprah moments of the year:

1. Katherine Jackson and Michael Jackson’s kids discuss life after Michael.

One of the biggest stories of 2009, if not the decade, was the unexpected death of Michael Jackson as he was on the verge of launching a major tour in London. A year following his death, Michael’s mother discussed her son while offering Oprah the exclusive of speaking to the fallen pop star’s children.

2. Tyler Perry Recalls Physical and Sexual Abuse

For the first time in his career, Tyler Perry spoke at length about the awful sexual abuse he encountered from both men and women as a young child. Following this episode, Oprah and Tyler reunited again for a special edition of The Oprah Winfrey Show that allowed over 200 men to discuss their own battles with molestation.

3. Mo’Nique’s Brother Admits Molestation

The Oscar winner and BET late night talk show host, Mo’Nique, previously discussed the sexual abuse she suffered at the hands of her brother, Gerald Imes. Several months after her episode aired, Imes reached out to Oprah in order to confess to his transgressions – uh, sort of.

4. The Color Purple Reunion

In honor of the 25th anniversary of The Color Purple’s release, Oprah rounded up the original cast of the beloved movie. During this episode, Oprah and co-star Whoopi Goldberg spoke openly about their long-rumored beef.

5. Terry McMillan and Jonathan Plummer Reunite

At one point, it appeared the celebrated author and her gay ex-husband couldn’t stand to be in the same room with each other. But, while promoting her new book, Getting To Happy, the sequel to Waiting To Exhale, Terry McMillan and Jonathan Plummer talked about their previous rifts and more pleasant current relationship.

6. Roger Ebert

The beloved film critic spoke through a state-of-the-art text-to-speech computer to discuss life after losing his voice as the result of several surgeries undergone to fight his battle with thyroid cancer.

7. Todd Bridges

Promoting his autobiography, Killing Willis: From Diff’rent Strokes to the Mean Streets to the Life I Always Wanted, the Diff’rent Strokes star shared his thoughts on the deaths of his co-stars, Gary Coleman and Dana Plato, along with his own notorious battles with drugs.

8. Will & Jada Pinkett Smith Bring Whole Family

On this episode, Willl Smith and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith collectively channeled the spirits of Iyanla Vanzant, Dear Abby, and a bit of Dr. Seuss yesterday during their appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show. The family – with all of the kids and the ex-wife – talked parenting and co-existing.

9. Oprah’s Favorite Things

Another year of awesome gifts, another reason to be incredibly jealous for not being in the studio audience. Actually, two reasons this year as Oprah upped the ante with back-to-back episodes of the famed Oprah tradition.

10. Oprah Sends Audience to Australia

Oprah treats one entire studio audience to a 10-day trip to Australia piloted by John Travolta. We’ll be seeing these Australian-themed episodes come January.

Tyler Perry Recalls Past Sexual and Physical Abuse

Published by Michael Arceneaux on Thursday, October 21, 2010 at 12:00 am.

On yesterday’s episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show, Tyler Perry spoke on the sexual and physical abuse he endured as a young child.

By the age of 10, Tyler revealed that both men and women had molested him. A male nurse, a man at his church, and the mother of a friend were listed as some of the perpetrators.

The graphic details include the man at the church performing oral sex on him, another tale involved the mother of his friend locking him inside of her home and forcing him to pull the key from inside of her vagina.

As a result, Tyler says a sexual awkwardness has followed him for much of his adult life. He says he’s only had five serious relationships, and that as he got older he discovered certain “triggers” from his past that would make him uncomfortable.

Among them include lingerie, which one of his molesters wore while assaulting him.

Perry also described the brutal beatings he suffered at the hands of his father. Those beatings grew worse once Perry disclosed to his mother that his father molested one of his friends.

Though Perry did acknowledge his mother introduced him to Christ and as a result helped him, he also said his mother was too passive to help where it mattered most: Standing up to his father.

He told Oprah, “She did not have that backbone to stand up for herself, so certainly she couldn’t stand up for me.”

Still, Perry cites his mother, who passed last year, as his “saving grace.”

Tyler’s aunt, who sat in the audience, also provided relief by way of bringing a gun over to Perry’s home after discovering the beatings he suffered from his dad. Needless to say, she was the inspiration behind the “Madea” character.

Because of this abuse, the famed director said for a period of his life he was a troublemaker – including committing acts of arson – all in the name of “making people feel as much pain as I did.”

As for the relationship between Perry and his father today, Tyler says that while he sends him checks and put him up in a mansion in their native Louisiana, they don’t keep in touch.

Perry’s father taunted that had he beaten Tyler more that he would be Barack Obama.

Because of this interview, Tyler Perry says he will rejoin Oprah on Nov. 5, 2010 when 200 men will come forward and speak on their own molestation stories in front of their wives, girlfriends, and mothers.

At the close of their interview, Tyler thanked Oprah for sharing her story of sexual assault years ago and inspiring millions to come forward.

Will Katherine Jackson Be On Oprah?

Published by Michael Arceneaux on Monday, October 11, 2010 at 12:00 am.

Could Mama Jackson be making her way to The Oprah Winfrey Show soon?

According to TMZ, they say production trucks showed up at the Jackson family compound along with two black SUVs.

When asked what the business is crewmembers told TMZ that they were there for “an Oprah shoot.”

Oh, if Katherine Jackson will indeed be on my Goddess’ show I need her to ask the following:

1. Does she ever get mad about all of her children speaking in this whisper instead of their natural voice?

2. Can she name more than two Jermaine Jackson songs?

3. Can she name more than one LaToya Jackson song?

4. Has she ever found herself walking around her home late at night and singing, “When the centipede is hot?”

5. Did she also laugh during Janet Jackson’s “Perfect Patty” scene?

And of course, we have to ask her about Joe Jackson. Like why hasn’t she gotten rid of him yet? Why won’t he get a job? Does she ever want to treat him the way Mrs. Gordon did her baby way back when?

Kanye West Upsets Oprah

Published by Michael Arceneaux on Thursday, October 7, 2010 at 12:00 am.

There are just some things in life you shouldn’t do. Pissing off Oprah should top that list.

It seems Kanye West was scheduled to perform and interview with my TV goddess, only he abruptly canceled at the last minute.

In Touch reports that producers of The Oprah Winfrey Show had arranged for a rooftop location for Kanye’s performance (naturally, he couldn’t just perform on stage like regular people) but he bailed out – by email.

An “insider” claims “Oprah is not happy” because “all the arrangements had been made.”

If this is true, you better a say a prayer for Kanye. Forget Taylor Swift, Oprah is the G you don’t want to annoy. Have mercy on his soul.

Oprah Books Mel Gibson’s Ex

Published by Michael Arceneaux on Thursday, September 30, 2010 at 12:00 am.

By now you’ve heard about Mel Gibson and his affinity for racial slurs, gay insults, and misogynistic rants that have pretty much made him one of the most hated public figures in recent memory.

It seems now that the women who was on the receiving end of all of those mentally disturbed themed phone calls, Russian singer Oksana Grigorieva, will pop a squat on Oprah Winfrey’s coach for conversation.

Usmagazine.com reports that Oksana will appear on The Oprah Winfrey Show to discuss her relationship with the writer/director/anger management don’t in the near feature.

Though Team Harpo wouldn’t confirm, TMZ already has which pretty much means that it will come to pass.

Oprah is really trying to go out with a bang of in this case, a bleepity bleep, huh?

Oprah Sends Studio Audience On Australian Vacay

Published by Starr Rhett on Tuesday, September 14, 2010 at 8:00 am.

Just when it didn’t seem like Oprah could get any better at giving gifts, she throws another curve ball to a lucky bunch of people. Initially, the biggest, most shocking thing she did was give everyone in her studio audience a car in 2004. Then, she gifted her employees at O magazine with iPads a couple of months ago to celebrate 10 years, but that stuff is child’s play compared to what she did yesterday.

The Queen of Media kicked off the first show of her final season by giving everyone a 10-day trip to Australia. It gets better. John Travolta will be flying the plane. About 300 people will be going and Oprah gave each recipient a Motorola Smart phone, you know, just in case they want to call people back home and gloat while they’re on their free vacation. She also announced that she will be taping a show at the Sydney Opera House with Australia’s biggest fans.

Oprah is also celebrating her show’s 25th anniversary this year. So far this is her biggest giveaway to her studio audience ever, but I have a feeling it’s going to get better. Hopefully between now and then I can figure out how to get close enough to “unwittingly” reap the benefits of being within a 20-yard radius of Oprah. Seriously, can she like, adopt a journalist?

Oprah, The View, Others Nominated For Emmys

Published by Starr Rhett on Thursday, May 13, 2010 at 11:00 am.

Pre-nominations for this year’s 37th Annual Daytime Emmys are in and some of your favorite talk shows and soap operas are scoring. General Hospital leads the pack with 18 nods while The Young and the Restless got 16. Both will vie for outstanding drama series with The Bold and the Beautiful and All My Children, which received 11 and 10 nominations, respectively.

Talk shows in the running include The Ellen DeGeneres Show with eight nominations, The View with five and The Oprah Winfrey Show with four. Even though The View scored multiple nominations, each one is for Outstanding Talk Show Host so technically it’s not the show, it’s the women.

I don’t watch soap operas (or “stories”) but I have my money on The View, especially with dynamic personalities like Whoopi Goldberg (my favorite), Joy Behar and Sherri Shepherd (who is sometimes too over the top). If they don’t win, something is wrong.

The Emmys is scheduled to air on CBS on June 27, live from Vegas.

There’s a long list of nominees that I didn’t even begin to touch. Who did I leave out? Are you satisfied the nominations thus far?
