Tracy Morgan Reveals Kidney Donator; Takes Another Jab At Sarah Palin

Published by Michael Arceneaux on Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at 12:00 am.

If I really, really like you I might let you pick from my plate without fear of me biting you.

I tend to think that’s one of the nicest things you can offer a friend. People have different ideas, though, like say, donating a major body organ.

While on the red carpet at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday, Tracy Morgan revealed who donated their kidney to him.

He told E!’s Giuliana Rancic:

“I’d like to thank Tanisha for donating my kidney to me. We were together, but then we separated. But she also gave me a kidney.”

Sweet.

Tanisha Hall is the first woman Morgan dated after divorcing his then-wife Sabrina back in 2009. Morgan had his operation in December.

While his kidney may now be in pristine condition, his mouth is still giving him stress – or well, his publicist stress.

Despite the backlash over comments he made about Sarah Palin’s uh…attractiveness, Tracy keeps on talking.

He ended his red carpet interview with: “Sarah Palin, you’re the hottest MILF in the world! She’s a MILF!

Tracy Morgan Talks NBC, Tina Fey, and Alcohol

Published by Michael Arceneaux on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at 12:00 am.

In an interview with VIBE.com, comedian and actor Tracy Morgan talks how about the peacock network aided him in his career growth, how he and Tina Fey relate, and how his wife’s leaving him made him get real about his drinking problems.

On NBC’s role in his career and how it differentiates from other black actors and comedians:

“I got my biggest break on NBC. There’s not many of us on there, I don’t mean that in a bad way, but I went thru Saturday Night Live and I think a lot of our people as a whole stopped watching Saturday Night Live when Eddie Murphy left. My fourth year I started to emerge and get notoriety on the show and then when I left there I went to the Tracy Morgan Show. And after the Tracy Morgan Show was canceled I went to 30 Rock and I that’s when I got a wider audience. I’ve been here [in the business] for a minute but it takes time for people to hear and know your voice, especially when you’re in their home.”

Tracy on his relationship with 30 Rock boss and co-star, Tina Fey:

“Tina Fey understands me, we have great chemistry. We don’t do many scenes together on 30 Rock but when we do the whole thing itis magic. Tina was smart enough to know that I’m smart and I know what I am doing. [I can’t give her] all the credit for my career but she was smart enough to know how to use me. She always told everybody, ‘You gotta let Tracy be Tracy.’ She was an absolutely an ally for me on SNL, totally. Tina and Paula Pell used to write me in stuff all the time. I used to just tickle them and it was cool. After The Tracy Morgan Show got canceled I was in a pretty funky place. And when she called me I didn’t know 30 Rock was gonna [makes explosion sound] the way it did, but I’m glad it happened with her. She’s a really cool cat.”

On how he won his notorious battle with alcoholism:

“What made me stop is when I woke up and my wife who I was with for 21 years, Sabina Morgan left me. She wanted off the rollercoaster. And that was it. I thought I was winning because I was on TV, I had money but I loss. And when we got divorced, I was like, ‘whatever she wants give it to her.’ And I love her, she’s still my best friend. Twenty-one years later, nothings changed— we still say I love you. Sabina still gets on my nerves sometimes, but that’s my girl, that’s my baby. So having gone through all of this—it’s made me a better man, rather than just a funny man. I’ve always wanted to be a good man, a better man.”

Tracy Morgan Recovering From A Kidney Transplant

Published by Starr Rhett on Tuesday, December 21, 2010 at 11:00 am.

Actor and comedian Tracy Morgan is recovering from a kidney transplant undergone earlier this month (Dec. 10), his publicist said in a statement on Monday.

The 42-year-old entertainer will miss about two episodes of 30 Rock, the show in which he co-stars with Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin, and plays a caricature of his Saturday Night Live days. According to E! Online, his character’s absence will be explained by some “happy news.”

“Tracy is doing well and taking some much needed time to recover after the surgery,” said the statement. “He is looking forward to going back to work after the holidays.”

Morgan was diagnosed with diabetes nearly 15 years ago but did not take the disease seriously. The episodes Morgan will miss are due to air in March.

We wish him a speedy recovery.

Tracy Morgan Coming To HBO

Published by Michael Arceneaux on Friday, July 23, 2010 at 12:00 am.

Tracy Morgan will make his HBO stand-up debut this November in a solo comedy special.

The special will be entitled Tracy Morgan: Black and Blue and will tape before a live audience at the Apollo Theater on September 24 and 25.

For many comics, their own HBO special is a confirmation of their success as a comedian.

Although many know Tracy from his roles on 30 Rock, SNL and Martin, some are largely unfamiliar with his stand-up routine.

In a press release, HBO senior vice president of original programming Nancy Geller said viewers can expect to see “an exciting, outrageous, and no-holds-barred special.”

In that same statement, Tracy wrote: “The special is going to be all the elements: fire, water, earth, air, the comedy bender, the avatar of comedy experience,” said Morgan in a statement.

As of now there is no official airdate for the special, though it is expected to premiere sometime in November.

Tracy Morgan Tapped Again To Host Scare Tactics

Published by Michael Arceneaux on Friday, March 19, 2010 at 12:00 am.

tracymorgan-scaretactics

Actor and comedian Tracy Morgan will reprise his role as host in the fourth season of the hidden camera reality series, Scare Tactics.

The 30 Rock star will also add executive producer to his list of titles for the first time.

It was announced the show received a half-hour, 13-episode pick up order this week.

The Syfy series is based on placing unsuspecting victims into elaborately staged scary situations involving movie-style special effects and makeup. The horror hoaxes are designed to tap into the wildest fears of the prank’s prey.

On Tracy’s role in the show, Mark Stern, Executive Vice President of Original Programming, said, “Tracy has his finger on the pulse when it comes to comedy and having him on board as executive producer just adds another layer to the huge success of our show.”

Executive producer of the series, Scott Hallock added, “First, having Tracy on board is huge. Second, Kevin [Healey] and I have already started working with our writers on innovations that will make season four our biggest, scariest and most hilarious yet.”

Tracy Morgan Hosts Scare Tactics With Common Sense

Published by Starr Rhett on Monday, October 19, 2009 at 11:00 am.

Tracy Morgan recently made headlines with his less than stellar comments about former SNL castmates, Chris Kattan and Cher O’Teri. But isn’t his brash (and sometimes very offbeat) sense of humor why we love him? Of course it is. That must be why Scyfy chose him to host the new season of Scare Tactics. It seems like a random choice but aside from the fact that he’s good as a host, he brings a unique new twist. Instead of just announcing, he adds hilarious common sense musings on what you, the voyeur, would be thinking (ie. “Don’t run that way!” or “Why would you want to work in a mental ward after midnight anyway?”). I wonder if he’s as mischievously amused by the show as I am.

I’ve never said this out loud (nor have I written it) but I love Scare Tactics. I am sometimes a sadist when it comes to what I think is funny so with practical jokes I pull no punches—in my head. Seriously, if I pulled any of the awful elaborate pranks that I fantasize about I’d probably have no friends (or family who actually claim me) but I digress. This is where Scare Tactics comes in because I can live vicariously through other evil prankers. In case you’re not familiar, ST focuses on terrorizing unsuspecting victims with extreme plots that you see in science fiction and horror movies but tell yourself isn’t real, however,  you’d never know unless it happened. (I’m stifling an evil snicker as I type this).

The new season snuck up on me but I will be ready tomorrow night at 9pm, when the next episode airs (it comes on every Tuesday at that time EST). In the meantime, check out a clip of Morgan’s hilarious outtakes while hosting and a super funny (or maybe not, depending on how you look at it) “scare of the week.” Be warned, there is some cursing and offensive language.

Outtake 1

Outtake 2

Scare of the Week

P.S. Morgan did an interview with a site named Monsters and Critics where he was asked, “What’s your biggest fear?” His response: “The IRS. That’s it. If you sent the IRS to my house for no reason I think I would be pretty scared, something like that.”

Tracy Morgan Slams Former SNL Castmates

Published by Starr Rhett on Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at 1:10 am.

Tracy Morgan’s capricious loopy personality can be hit or miss at times. However,  he’s going to say exactly what’s on his mind whether you like him or not—with absolutely no damage control. That’s exactly why his forthcoming memoir, I Am the New Black is already creating quite the stir because of extremely blunt remarks he made about former SNL castmates Cheri O’Teri and Chris Kattan.

In his memoir, Morgan is honest about his upbringing, personal life and extracurricular activities. As far as his attitude toward former co-workers, according to Entertainment Weekly, when discussing his 10-year stint on Saturday Night Live, Morgan writes that he was disrespected by  Kattan and Oteri, and let them have it. (“Where’s Chris Kattan now? Where’s Cheri Oteri now? That bitch can’t even get arrested.”)

Wait. It gets worse.

Morgan was so angry that he went off-script while recording his audiobook adding, “They never going to host Saturday Night Live. And I don’t mean — that’s not even me, but that’s what happened to me over there. They never treated me well. There were people that treated me beautifully, like Will Ferrell and Colin Quinn and Molly Shannon— I love them. But Cheri O’teri and Chris Kattan — I never cared for them either. F— ‘em.”

Wow. I don’t know about you, but I definitely want to know what the heck happened behind the scenes.

Note to Self: Do not piss off Tracy Morgan. Hustle Man will curse you out!

I Am the New Black goes on sale Oct. 20.

Def Jam’s Forgotten Exec Wants You To Watch Vh1’s Hip-Hop Honors

Published by Starr Rhett on Tuesday, September 29, 2009 at 10:51 am.

It’s about that time of year again when Vh1 presents Hip-Hop Honors. This year, they’re doing something slightly different by featuring not just specific artists but a whole label—that’s right, Def Jam gets a salute in honor of their 25 year anniversary.

Tracy Morgan is the host as usual but this year he has introduced us to an important player in Def Jam’s success, who has been forgotten over the years—Scoopy Giles. That’s right, Scoopy was there with Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin, and he even found time to be the fourth member of Tony! Toni! Toné! So why is he unsung? Check out his interview with Nancy Grace as he shares his story.

The skits leading up to the show are my favorite part of Hip-Hop Honors but this year’s show should be good. Expect performances by Public Enemy, Ghostface, EPMD, Eminem and even the ladies. Remember when women in hip-hop reigned supreme? Yep, there will also be performances by Ashanti, Eve, Foxy Brown, Mary J. Blige and more. Make sure you tune in on Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 9/8c. I’ll be watching.

Click here for more information on VH1 Hip-Hop Honors!

P.S. I wonder if this will ever be Bad Boy Records.

DVD Review: 30 Rock: Season 3

Published by Michael Arceneaux on Tuesday, September 22, 2009 at 12:51 am.

30rock-seasonthree

There’s a reason why 30 Rock is nominated for 90 Emmys every year and typically wins 89 of them: It’s the best thing on television.

I would rub Tina Fey’s feet for a job on the series. But until my opportunity for a human resources disaster happens, I can at least continue to cling to my dream via past episodes.

Thankfully, the back-to-back winner for Best Comedy Series has just released its third season on DVD.

Last season saw the show gain bigger audiences thanks in part to appearances by the likes of the Goddess of Television, Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Aniston, Steve Martin, and Salma Hayek.

Look out for episodes from Season Three like “Reunion,” which netted 30 Rock scribe Matt Hubbard an Emmy for Best Writing for a Comedy Series. In that episode, Liz Lemon (played by Tina Fey) is convinced by Jack Donaghy (played by Alec Baldwin) to attend her high school reunion and discovers that she wasn’t the lowly nerd everyone picked on; she was the class bully who made all of the popular people want to jump in traffic (kind of like most celebrity bloggers).

Other favorites include “Believe In The Stars,” which pits Jenna (played by Jane Krakowski) and Tracy (played by Tracy Morgan) in a contest over who has it worse: White women or black men.

Tracy Morgan seems to get some people in arms, but I find him to be hilarious and while he didn’t win Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy this year hopefully he’ll be rewarded in the future. Ya’ll know the Academy wasn’t right for ignoring his brilliant work as “Hustle Man” on Martin. It’s time they make amends.

Those of you looking for behind the scenes footage on the show centered on being behind the scenes can look forward to your typical audio commentary from show creator and star Tina Fey along with other cast members and producers. There’s also footage of the table read of the hilarious season finale, along with a making of video of the faux-charity single, “He Needs A Kidney,” and the 1-900-OKFace commercial starring Liz Lemon.

If you’re a fan of the show, you will likely enjoy the bonus features as producers continue to make sure they don’t make the same mistake as they did with Season One on DVD.

And to any out of there still wondering, “Is the show really that funny?” yes it is. Now get with it and get the DVD.

Emmy Recap: Will The Emmys Ever Honor Vanessa Williams?

Published by Michael Arceneaux on Monday, September 21, 2009 at 7:00 am.

neil

Last weekend’s award show included a Michael Jackson tribute featuring Madonna and Janet Jackson, an impromptu battle between Kanye West and Lil’ Mama for the most embarrassing Negro of the year award, and a twirk-heavy performance from Beyonce.

This weekend’s award show offered the vocal styling’s of Neil Patrick Harris and a demure version of Tracy Morgan I’m not quite used to. It’s as if the one loose cannon invited to the event had been given a tranquilizer to be sure he wouldn’t do anything remotely exciting.

Needless to say, the 61st Emmy Awards didn’t pack as great a punch as the 2009 VMAs.

Still, if you’re a TV fan this was the award show to watch. As expected, both 30 Rock and Mad Men repeated their wins in the Best Comedy and Drama Series categories respectively.

There were some surprise wins, though, such as Toni Collette winning Best Actress in a Comedy for her role as Tara Gregson, wife and mother with dissociative identity disorder (DID), in the series United States of Tara.

There are actors who can barely get one character in a given show right let alone multiple ones spanning both gender and age. Collette certainly deserved to be recognized for her great work on season one of the Diablo Cody and Steven Spielberg affiliated series.

Speaking of recognition, I hope the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences eventually honors Vanessa Williams for her work in Ugly Betty.  This was her third time being nominated and her third time losing!

I’m not just saying that because she’s black either. Quite the opposite: She is great on the show and more importantly Vanessa Williams is the mastermind behind the underrated classic “The Right Stuff.”

She deserves every award she’s nominated for because of that song alone.

Anywho, here is the list of winners in the major categories:

COMEDY SERIES: 30 Rock (NBC)

DRAMA SERIES: Mad Men (AMC)

REALITY COMPETITION PROGRAM: The Amazing Race (CBS)

ACTOR IN A COMEDY: Alec Baldwin – 30 Rock (NBC)

ACTOR IN A DRAMA: Bryan Cranston – Breaking Bad (AMC)

ACTRESS IN A COMEDY: Toni Collette - United States of Tara (Showtime)

ACTRESS IN A DRAMA: Glenn Close - Damages (FX Networks)

SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A COMEDY: Jon Cryer - Two And A Half Men (CBS)

SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A DRAMA: Michael Emerson - Lost (ABC)

SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY: Kristin Chenoweth - Pushing Daisies (ABC)

SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A DRAMA: Cherry Jones - 24 (Fox)

VARIETY, MUSIC OR COMEDY SERIES: The Daily Show with Jon Stewart
