Parent Sues ‘Tyra Banks Show’

Published by Michael Arceneaux on Monday, October 18, 2010 at 12:00 am.

Though her show may be off the air, that’s not sparing The Tyra Banks Show from new lawsuits on old episodes.

It seems one mother is alleging that her child appeared on a show about sex addicts without her consent.

Indeed, Beverly McClendon filed suit in an Atlanta federal court claiming Tyra Banks, along with Warner Bros. executives and producers of The Tyra Banks Show failed to get her consent to allow her 15-year-old daughter to appear on an episode about sex addiction.

Jewel Ciera Washington apparently appeared on the show after responding to an open call for self-described sex addicts on the show’s Web site.

The mother of the teen is suing on the grounds of negligence and asking for an injunction for any future airings on the episode.

In legal documents, McClendon has alleged her daughter’s appearance has led to her receiving unwanted attention from “sexual deviants, perverts and pedophiles alike.”

ANTM Cycle 15 Contestants Announced

Published by Starr Rhett on Monday, August 23, 2010 at 11:00 am.

Last week, there was controversy about Tyra Banks and crew fawning over an America’s Next Top Model Cycle 15 contestant because her waist was so tiny. Banks immediately issued an apology, saying that folks took it the wrong way–ie, like she was glorifying the woman because she was small. Then, Janice Dickinson came out saying that she didn’t believe the apology. Either way, Tyra Banks must be thrilled with the attention because the new contestants were announced over the weekend and it seems like people are still watching the show, like it’s not the same thing over and over.

It’s the usual run-of-the-mill girls. Most of them are 20-somethings from Middle Of Nowhereville but there doesn’t seem to be the token plus sized model this time around. The most interesting thing about the cast is Black sister act Terra and Chris, from Arlington, Texas. The last sister act was a pair of red-headed twins from…I don’t remember how many cycles ago. But this time around, according to ANTM intel, Chris, the younger of the pair, has more personality than all the other girls, including her sister, which probably really means that she’ll be involved in a lot of drama but I digress.

The 14 model hopefuls will compete for a spread in Vogue Italia, among other high-fashion prizes, when the series returns September 8. There will be special guests, including big-name designers who will join Tyra Banks, Nigel Barker and Andre Leon Talley as they search for their number one girl.

For more information on the girls and for casting videos, click on the source link.

Janice Dickinson Calls Tyra Banks’ Apology Fraud

Published by Starr Rhett on Friday, August 20, 2010 at 11:00 am.

Janice Dickinson doesn’t buy Tyra Banks‘ remorse. The self-proclaimed “first super model” says that Banks’ apology for a for a controversial new commercial for the new season of America’s Next Top Model, which features judges fawning over the tiny waist of an extremely thin contestant, is disingenuous.

After the commercial received negative backlash, Banks issued a statement saying the promo had been “misconstrued” because “it is just impossible for me to see everything that’s created.”

But Dickinson calls Pinocchio.

“Excuse me, but Tyra is the executive producer of that show,” Dickinson told Access Hollywood. “She has her finger on everything. No, I don’t believe it. It’s her show. She’s very controlling. She’s the hardest working woman on that show. She has her finger on that pulse – trust me.

That’s not hard to believe. If you’ve watched Banks’ talk show enough, then you’ve probably seen moments where she admits to being a workaholic and wanting to be involved in everything, ie, being a control freak.

Dickinson continued her rant with, “Everything they shoot is intentional. Don’t tell me different. I did it for five seasons.”

Dickinson probably felt the need to blow up Banks’ spot (which wasn’t very undercover anyway) to keep that catty rivalry they have going  (gotta get that Celebrity Rehab promo) — the one they claim doesn’t exist, but I digress.

Despite the fact that Banks goes around trying to convince people that she’s all about female empowerment and self-love, America’s Next Top Model is a superficial show that caters to the stereotypical model, in other words, really tall, thin and not like the average woman at all. That’s sadly the way fashion is. No one should be shocked about this.

But at the same time, if you saw someone with an abnormally tiny waist you’d probably gawk and stare too.

Tyra Banks Apologizes For ‘ANTM’ Promo Clip

Published by Starr Rhett on Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at 11:00 am.

Tyra Banks has issued an apology after some folks felt that an America’s Next Top Model promo for cycle 15 could send the wrong message. The clip depicted Banks and her cronies fellow judges fawning over a contestant’s tiny waist. Banks posted the following statement as a result of the backlash:

On behalf of the entire Top Model team, I am truly sorry for the style in which the Top Model promo clip was presented. Like all of my projects, I am extremely involved in America’s Next Top Model from casting the final contestants to conceptualizing the episode challenges, but with all the work and details that go into producing a TV show, I can’t be 100 places at once (although I try), but it’s just impossible for me to see everything that’s created before it’s released to all of you! That being said I can assure you – that cut has been removed from the CW airwaves, and the message conveyed in that video was NOT intentional, and is certainly not Top Model- or Tyra-approved. The Top Model team is extremely talented and truly enjoys creating fun, engaging promos and episodes for you. The team really wants to entertain you, while promoting and embracing multiple forms of beauty. Sometimes in the quest to have fun in a limited amount of time, especially in a 20-second promo, our overarching message can be misconstrued, and in this case it most certainly was.

To the people who see me as a representation of upholding the fact that beauty comes in all sizes, I personally apologize. The jokes of my fellow judges connected with my edited sound bite sounded like I was supporting unhealthy eating habits. This has never and will NEVER be the case – I am and will always be committed to promoting healthy body image.

This apology would do nothing to ease my pain if I was one of those said individuals complaining about the promo. Think about it, the show isn’t plus-size model friendly. Toccara Jones (from cycle 3) had a heck of a time maintaining on the show because of her size (and she’s about the average size of an American woman). She was often ridiculed by designers on go-sees and then told by Tyra Banks and crew to suck it up, not verbatim but close enough.  There was one plus-size woman (Whitney Thompson) who actually won the competition during cycle 10.

You took statistics in school, right? There was one plus-size winner throughout the whole series, and we’re going on cycle 15. Way to promote a healthy body image! The best thing that anyone – who is impressionable enough to believe that a 20-second clip should determine how they view themselves – can do is to not watch the show at all. As a matter of fact, they shouldn’t watch any TV and avoid magazines too.

The Tyra Banks Show Says Goodbye

Published by Michael Arceneaux on Friday, May 28, 2010 at 3:03 am.

tyra-finale

Late last year, Tyra Banks announced that after five seasons and two Emmys that she was ending her daytime talk show in order to pursue other interests.

On the series finale of her talk show, Tyra Banks will reflect on some of her show’s best moments.

Over the years Tyra Banks has interviewed everyone from Rihanna and Chris Brown to the then Illinois junior Senator, Barack Obama.

She’s dressed in a fat suit, appeared live on television in a bathing suit, and spent time as a homeless person.

In speaking about some of her favorite moments on the show, Tyra noted her recreating Beyonce’s “Déjà vu” video along with getting in bed with Janet Jackson on her tour bus.

Although Tyra will be leaving daytime, her presence on television will still be felt. The 15th season of America’s Next Top Model looks to be one of the biggest yet given the new grand prize waiting for the next winner.

There’s also her show, True Beauty on ABC. Not to mention Tyra has recently announced plans for a book series and to produce films.

All and all Tyra’s media empire will continue to grow, but I know many will miss the void she filled in daytime.

For fans of The Tyra Banks Show, what are some of your favorite moments?

Next Top Model Will Cover Italian Vogue

Published by Michael Arceneaux on Monday, May 24, 2010 at 12:00 am.

tyra-andre

For a good while I stopped watching America’s Next Top Model.

It just seemed after Danielle Evan’s win that crop of girls Tyra Banks and producers found were more about making the party guest list and red carpet than they are any catwalk.

However, once Tyra announced that Andre Leon Talley would be joining the judging table I got hooked again.

This past season was one of the best and featured a group of girls that actually looked like they could achieve a credible career in modeling.

After so many years it’s hard to keep things fresh, but according to EW.com’s Pop Watch it seems Tyra’s found yet another way to pique the interest of Top Model fans.

They report that the CW has confirmed that the winner of next season’s edition of Top Model will grace the cover of Italian Vogue.

That is undoubtedly the biggest prize this show has had to cover since its inception and no doubt it has a lot to do with Andre Leon Talley.

With her talk show wrapping soon it seems Tyra’s putting her all into the show that helped build her expanding media empire.

Tyra Banks Gets a Book Deal

Published by Starr Rhett on Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at 11:00 am.

Tyra Banks is fast rising to Oprah status when it comes to media domination. The mode/talk show host/actress/singer/reality show host/producer is now writing her first work of fiction, Modelland.

Modelland is the debut novel in a three-book deal Banks signed with Random House. Plot details and release dates have not yet been announced but Banks had this idea brewing for a long time.

“I said I was going to do it, and here it is!” Banks wrote on her website. “It’s for all the girls and guys who want a lot more FANTASY in their lives … and some fierceness and magic, romance and mystery, crazy and wild adventures, and yeah, some danger too. It’s my novel called ‘Modelland’ (pronounced “Model Land”) that takes you to a fantastical place you’ve never seen, or heard about, or read about before … Where dreams come true and life can change in the blink of a smoky eye.”

Tyra has a previously published book entitled, Tyra’s Beauty, Inside and Out where she gave women tips for highlighting their natural beauty. As far as her latest book, with a name like Modelland, I can only imagine how dramaful it’s going to get.

What do you think, is this going to be another successful endeavor for Banks?

Janice Dickinson Blasts Tyra Banks

Published by Michael Arceneaux on Friday, April 9, 2010 at 12:00 am.

janice-dickinson

Janice Dickinson, the self-professed world’s first supermodel and all around eccentric narcissist, has a new reality show on the way.

But, naturally people still look back to the first show that really got people interested in her as a television personality.

Judging from past comments there seems to be a bit of tension between Janice and her old boss, Tyra Banks.

If you didn’t think that before, please check out what she told Out magazine recently about Top Model and Tyra.

What would it take for you to go back on America’s Next Top Model?
Please. Why would I want to back pedal? I want to go forward, young man. Not a damn thing could get me back.

So, you and Tyra…
Well, aren’t you happy? Isn’t the world glad? That I made that show very successful and Tyra cut out everything that I said and repeated what I was saying on camera. Oh, snap!

Have you ever thought about getting your own talk show?
Oh, I am a talk show. The answer is yes. And I don’t think Telepictures [the production company that produces The Tyra Banks Show] is going to give me one because wherever Tyra is, she ain’t letting me in the front door, bitch! She’s not letting me in. Guess what? I don’t really care. I do want a talk show — the answer is yes. The world needs me on television because I can speak — in three languages.

Someone sounds saltier than a bottle of Lawry’s.

Is that really Tyra’s fault or hers?

Tyra Features Gold Digging Mamas

Published by Michael Arceneaux on Monday, February 22, 2010 at 12:20 am.

Thank you, Tyra Banks, for giving the world yet another example of why birth control matters.

Recently Tyra featured self-described gold diggers who teach their daughters the ways of the bird call. For example, one girl was instructed to only befriend a boy if he gives her some of his cookies. I guess it’s cookies today, last digits of his social security number tomorrow.

And then we saw other girls recite what they’ve been instructed. Basically: Marry rich and deny the deadbeats. Somewhere a feminist is sighing.

Tyra featured children of every hue, which showed women of every color to join together for the common goal of perpetuating negative stereotypes about women. Does that put anyone in the mood to sing “I’m Every Woman?”

Thankfully, a medical professional was brought in to help deprogram these poor children. On a future episode, Tyra should help those lost women who put those dense ideas into their kids’ heads. If you’re going to end up a gold digger, that’s one thing. But don’t have a little girl throwing shade at the age of 8 because a boy that has a crush on her is eating the wrong brand of peanut butter.
